CASE BACKGROUND
45 year old female presents with conductive hearing loss. Otoscopic examination shows a pulsatile, reddish-blue mass behind the tympanic membrane.
GLOMUS TUMOR
Paraganliomas that originate from the jugular bulb may extend to the middle ear are designated as glomus jugulare tumors, those originating primarily in the middle ear are classified as glomus tympanicum tumors. Glomus tumors are the most common middle ear tumor and are second to vestibular schwannoma as the most common tumor of the temporal bone. Metastases occur in approximately 4%.
